After Christmas bargins!
While browsing in the women's lingerie section at JCPenney, I found a pair of pajama bottoms and a top on Clearance for $8.80 each! I saved an additional 15% with a coupon I received from an online survey, which saved me an additional $2.64. If you're familiar with Jack Daniel's Coffee, you know you can usually find it at Target during the holidays. I purchased the one can I found this evening at Target at 75% off for only $2.49! This is a great buy I look forward to making every year after Christmas. So, I got a good buy on a pair of pajamas and some of my favorite coffee. These two purchases made my day.

After Christmas Shopping
Is it me, or does it feel like "the day after Christmas blues?" I did some after Christmas shopping in Vallejo, and to my surprise, some of the stores I browsed in weren't busy. It's as if Christmas was a distant memory that happened weeks ago. I noticed a few workers restocking shelves with Christmas merchandise at CVS that was 50% off. But, the hustle and bustle and long lines seem to be a thing of the past. Target was fairly crowded (as they often are), and Bed Bath & Beyond had a number of shoppers in the mid afternoon. Costco was busy, too, as it often is on Sundays. I stopped by The Avenue, too, this afternoon and was given a friendly greeting as usual. For a few minutes, I was the only customer in the store! There were several items at 50% off. I browsed in the clearance section for a few minutes, then left. If you've been following my blog for the past month, you know I've bought several items at The Avenue on sale and clearance that have pleased me a great deal. I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. I look forward to bringing you more "good buys & good eats" in 2011.

Use your $10 savings at Kohl's!
If you have a Kohl's coupon for $10 off a purchase of $20 or more, you have until this Friday to redeem it! I used mine this evening and purchased a microfleece blanket at 60% off for $15.99! I also bought a ginger apple dissfuser reed and refill set at 50% off for $7.49 that I opened as soon as I got home. And, with an additional 20% off coupon, my total was under $12.00! I left Kohl's a happy customer.

Chicken Hawaiian
If you like bell peppers, pineapples, and chicken, you'll love this dish. It's tangy, slightly sweet, and simple to make.
Chicken Hawaiian
2 tbsp vegetable oil
6 to 8 pieces of chicken (drumsticks and thighs)
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 10 3/4 oz can cream of chicken soup
1 20 oz can pineapple chunks (reserve juice)
Or 2 Cups fresh pineapple
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tbsp soy sauce
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet. Add chicken and brown on both sides for 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside. Add garlic, onions, and bell pepper. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Add soup, pineapples, juice, and brown sugar. Mix together. Add chicken and heat to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and simmer about 20 to 30 minutes, or until sauce thickens. Serve over hot cooked rice.
Note: For a more colorful dish, use green, red, and yellow bell peppers. Drumettes, or pork or beef spareribs may be substituted for chicken.

Fresh Dole Pineapples on Sale at Luckys
If you love fresh pineapple like I do, then head over to Luckys. Dole Pineapples are two for $3.00. I bought one this evening and cut it right after I ate my dinner. It was delicious, fresh, and juicy. I usually let my pineapples sit on the counter for a few days, but I couldn't wait. I'll be back to Luckys for one (or two) more before the sale ends.
The Avenue's 40% Off Sale!
I went to The Avenue last Thursday evening after work to use my "30% off One Item" coupon. There were several items on sale, many at 40% off. I smiled when I saw the table of Zip It Tunic's on sale for $9.99! I love these sweaters because they're warm and cozy like a thermal blanket. At that price; I bought another one. I bought a gray Zip It Tunic at 40% off about three weeks ago, so I chose the green one this time. Wouldn't you know it? I went back to The Avenue this evening on the last day of the "40% Off Everything" sale and noticed three black Zip It Tunic's, one in my size! So, I purchased a black one at 40% off for a little over $16.00 with tax (regularly $24.90). Oh, I could have bought more, but I was happy with this purchase alone.

Charles Shaw Nouveau
If you like Charles Shaw Nouveau, then stock up! It'll be gone after the holidays. I recently went to Trader Joe's to get a few bottles. One worker told me, "if you like it, stock up because it'll be gone at the end of the year." And she said I should stock up if I like this year's Nouveau because it tastes different every year. With that said, I bought four bottles of the Charles Shaw Nouveau 2010. It's one of the best red table wines I've had. And, like all Charles Shaw wines, it's only $1.99. Happy Holidays!
Old Orchard Healthy Balance Juice
I tried Old Orchard Healthy Balance Juice for the first time yesterday and was very pleased. For a juice that is "sweetened with Splenda," it tastes good. I bought two 64 ounce bottles yesterday at my neighborhood Luckys for only $0.99 cents each! I like grape and cranberry juice, so I chose these two flavors to try. Today's the last day to get them for $0.99 cents (limit 2) with a coupon in the Luckys ad. It's delicious juice without a lot of calories.

Collard Greens
I love a nice home-cooked meal on Sunday. So, today, I cooked some Collard Greens to go with my baked chicken and Macaroni & Cheese. It takes a few hours for the Collards to cook, but it's worth the wait when they're done. They're simple to cook, too.
Collard Greens
1 Ham Hock
1 pound package Cut N Clean Greens - Collard
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes
2 to 3 tablespoons chopped onions
1 to 2 cloves chopped garlic, optional
Salt, pepper, cayenne pepper to taste
Place Ham Hock in large pot and cover half way with water. Add red pepper flakes and bring to a boil, then lower to a simmer. Cover with lid and cook about 45 minutes. Add Collard Greens and remaining ingredients and cook 45 minutes longer. Splash a little vingegar on top of greens before serving if desired.

Christmas With Your Favorite Artists
I look forward to Christmas every year for the decorations, food, and quality time with my family and friends. But, I especially love listening to Christmas music from some of my favorite artists. Nothing puts me in the Christmas spirit more than being taken in by the beautiful sounds of Luther Vandross' "This is Christmas," Patti LaBelle's "The Christmas Collection," Boney James' "Boney's Funky Christmas," and Yolanda Adams' "Christmas With Yolanda Adams" (just to name a few). You can't help but be moved by these powerful, gifted singers. I enjoy listening to these cd's while driving and relaxing at home with a good book and a cup of tea. You'll definitely get in the Christmas spirit while listening to these artists.

Quilted Northern Toilet Paper
Need toilet paper? Then, head over to CVS this week to get Quilted Northern Soft & Strong, or Ultra Plush toilet paper on sale for $6.99. Today, I bought the last pack of the Soft & Strong 12 double rolls at my local CVS and used a manufacturer's coupon for $0.50 cents off! I got a rain check, too, for two more packages. At this price, I wasn't surprised that CVS ran out of them. But, I'll be back in a few days for more.

JC Penny Rewards Certificate
Store charge cards have their advantages. I love to receive JC Penny $10 dollar rewards certificates throughout the year. Yesterday, I used both of my certificates to purchase a lovely tan colored sweater and a pair of socks for just over $20.00. Store certificates are a great way to buy something you really need.

The Avenue Coupon
Tomorrow's the last day to use your "31% Off Your Purchase" coupon at The Avenue! I went to The Avenue today in San Jose to look at several clothing items. I didn't make a purchase today, but I plan to stop by The Avenue store in Sunnyvale tomorrow, since I'll be in the area.

Lane Bryant Gift Cheques
It pays to be on Lane Bryant's email and mailing list! A few days ago, I received two $15 dollar gift cheques. I used one yesterday at Lane Bryant Oakridge Mall and purchased a long-sleeve cotton shirt. At $19.99, I only added a little over $5.00! I'll be back soon to use the other one.

Black Friday at The Avenue
No early morning shopping for me. But, I did go to The Avenue after 12pm today to see what goodies I could find. I bought three more thermal shirts on Clearance for $6.96 each in a pretty green, light blue, and gray. What a great buy! I love getting nice clothes at discount prices. There were jeans, sweaters, and other items on sale, too. But, I was satisfied with my thermal shirts. I can't seem to stay out of this store lately. And with all the great sales they've been having, I'll keep going back!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Well, my sweet potatoes and peach cobbler are done. I'm off to Vallejo to be with my family for Thanksgiving. It'll be a nice family gathering with delicious food. I hope the freeways aren't too crowded. Enjoy your food and family today. Thanksgiving's only once a year, so don't skip dessert!

Great buys at Luckys
Head over to Luckys to take advantage of great buys for your Thanksgiving meals. A stalk of celery is only $0.37 cents (a must have for stuffing), and sweet potatoes are $0.37 cents a pound! I bought a stalk of celery and three more sweet potatoes to add to the ones I already have. I also bought one 10 ounce jar of PacificSeafood oysters for $1.99 I'll use in a gumbo soon. With deals like these, it makes Thanksgiving shopping more affordable. Hurry, the sale prices end tomorrow!

Turkey Enchilada Casserole
I planned to bake some chicken enchiladas but remembered I had some leftover turkey in the freezer. So, I used that instead, and they were delicious. I used my usual recipe, except I didn't fill or roll the tortillas. I made two layers instead, so it was more of a casserole dish. I cooked some Pinto Beans and rice, too, to serve with the enchiladas. Here's the recipe for both dishes.
Turkey Enchilada Casserole
1 1/2 to 2 cups chopped cooked chicken or turkey
1 can 10 3/4 oz. Campbell's Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup
1 cup La Victoria Salsa
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. each salt and pepper
1/2 tsp. Cumin
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 4 oz can of chopped green chiles
1/2 cup fresh chicken stock
12 corn tortillas or 6 to 8 large flour tortillas (warmed)
1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (Sharp, Monterey Jack, or Pepperjack)
16 to 24 oz can of enchilada sauce
Fry corn tortillas a few seconds on each side in hot vegetable oil. Drain on paper towels and set aside. Combine all ingredients except cheese. Pour enough enchilada sauce to cover a large, glass baking dish. Layer six tortillas on top, then spread chicken/turkey mixture on top. Place remaining tortillas on top and enough sauce to cover dish. Top with shredded cheese. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes until cheese is melted.
Pinto Beans
Soak about 16 ounces of Pinto Beans in water for 6 to 8 hours, or overnight. Drain.
Place beans back in pot.
Brown a pound of ground beef in skillet until no longer pink. Drain grease.
Add 1/2 cup chopped onions, 1/2 cup chopped celery, one bay leaf, and 1/2 tsp. cumin, and thyme. Salt and pepper to taste. Add a pinch of cayeene pepper (red pepper) and red pepper flakes (if desired). Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and top with lid. Cook about 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours, or until beans are tender. Add ground beef to beans half-way through cooking time. Serve over hot cooked rice.

The Zip It Tunic at The Avenue
I visited The Avenue clothing store today to use my "40% off One Single Item" coupon. I planned to use it on a sweater, which I desperately needed with the fall weather in tow. There were several sweaters, jeans, and other fall clothing on sale, but my eyes immediately went to a table at the front entrance filled with solid colored Zip It Tunic's." They're warm and comfortable like wearing a soft blanket. At $24.90 each, I only paid $14.94 with my 40% discount. I chose the gray because it will go with everything. And, I grabbed the last "The Thermal" shirt in my size on clearance for only $6.96 in a pretty aqua blue color! I could have easily bought more, but for now, this was do.

Sweet Potatoes
My mother informed me yesterday about the great buy for sweet potatoes at Grocery Outlet. Two three-pound bags are $3.00. I bought one bag today to make candied yams for Thanksgiving. I'll use any leftover sweet potatoes to make a sweet potato pie. As of this afternoon, there were plenty of sweet potatoes left. But, with Thanksgiving fast approaching, they won't last long. It's the lowest price I've seen for sweet potatoes, so hurry to a Grocery Outlet near you!

Ankle Skinny Chino at The Avenue
While visiting my family over the weekend in Vallejo, CA, I stopped by The Avenue and went to my favorite section in the store - the Clearance! My eyes lid up when I saw the red and white price tags at $9.96 and $14.96. I did a quick once-over look and spotted a nice, tan colored pair of pants for $9.96. I thought to myself, "I could use these at this price." I tried them on and loved the way they looked on me. They're sleek and slenderizing from waist to ankle. No wonder they're called ANKLE SKINNY CHINO. I didn't plan on buying anything and just wanted to look, but at that price, I had to buy. There's plenty of Clearance items left if you're interested. But don't wait to long!

Buxton Cell Phone Wallet
I've been using my Buxton Cell Phone Wallet for a few months now, and I love it! No more searching for my cell phone in my purse. Now, I just open the flap on my Buxton Cell Phone Wallet where it stays in place. There's plenty of slots for credit cards and money, too. You can even fit a lipstick, or two, and a compact mirror inside! It's a great accessory all by itself. This was another great buy I found on clearance for $6.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond in San Jose.
Lady Lee Milk
Where can you find good prices for milk? Look no further than Grocery Outlet on Monterey Road in San Jose. A gallon of two percent Lady Lee Milk varies from $2.59 to $2.69, but I've purchased it as low as $2.49. And, it tastes good, too. I'm pleased to say it's never spoiled before the "Use By" date either. You can't beat great-tasting milk at a bargain price.

Baking Turkeys
I finally baked my first turkey today, and it turned out good, juicy and tender, just the way I like it. It weighed just under 10 pounds. I rinsed it thoroughly, removed the parts inside, and rubbed margarine all around it. Then, I sprinkled it with salt and pepper. I baked it at 325 degrees for about two and a half hours. I let it rest about 20 minutes before cutting it. Now, I've got plenty of turkey for sandwiches, soup, and anything else I chose to make with it. I'll use the neck and other pieces for stock later on. All in all, it was a good first effort.

China Rose Is Excellent!
My family and I went to China Rose Restaurant in Milpitas for the first time last Sunday and loved it! Everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. And the service was wonderful. Our appetizers came shortly after we ordered. The pot-stickers and spring rolls were delicious, as well as all the entrees and soup. We ordered two family meals with two appetizers and two soups for just under $50.00 and enjoyed each dish with hot tea and water. The Sweet and Sour Pork, Mongolian Beef, and BBQ Pork Fried Rice were especially delicious. I'll definitely be back again!

Lane Bryant Clearance
I went to Lane Bryant yesterday at Oakridge Mall in San Jose hoping to find one, or two, long-sleeve sweaters, or blouses. I ended up getting two solid-colored short-sleeved shirts on clearance for $9.99 each! Everyone could use a gray and blue shirt. Thanks to a $15.00 Lane Bryant gift certificate, I only paid a little over $5.00! Another good buy on summer clothing.
Tuesday's at Old Navy
This was news to me! Old Navy gives customers 10 percent off every Tuesday. I found this out yesterday at check out from an employee. Hey, a little bit of savings is better than none at all. What I purchased was on sale, too, so the savings was great! I'll try to shop on Tuesday's at Old Navy more often.

Great buys on Clearance at Macy's!
If you're still looking to get some good buys on summer clothes, be sure to look through the Clearance racks at Macy's. If you love Macy's like I do, you know they have sales every week. And if you shop while there's an additional 10, 15, or 20% off, you save even more! A few weeks ago, I found a comfortable, stylish pair of Capri jeans on clearance for 75% off, plus an additional 20% off at Macy's Valley fair Mall in San Jose. I was so happy because I've admired these pants for months and was waiting for a price reduction. At almost $8.00, I definitely bought them. A few months ago, I purchased two casual Capri pants and blouse sets, plus one shirt for only $29.00 at Macy's Oakridge Mall in San Jose. This was my best buy of the summer! For the styles and prices, nobody does clearance better than Macy's.

Panasonic Lumix
I purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP2 digital camera a few months ago. I chose this camera because of the price, features, ease of use, and picture quality. I must say, I don't regret my decision. And for $135.99, it was a steal! Another great product from Best Buy.

The Boyfriend Jeans are hot!
I've bought many pairs of jeans over the years, but none have fit me as well as "The Boyfriend" jeans! I've never heard of them until today when I spotted them at The Avenue in San Jose. They're sleek and comfortable and fit me perfectly. These jeans really compliment my figure like no other jeans have done before. And, they only cost $29.90! Where has this "boyfriend" been all my life?

Home fragrances at Bed Bath & Beyond
Ah, fall is in the air, and I'm ready to fill my home with wonderful scents. Thank goodness I don't have to travel far to get them. I just head over to Bed Bath & Beyond! Today, I found a cucumber lemon Reed Diffuser on clearance for $6.49, and a week ago bought a delicious-smelling tangerine cream candle on clearance for $3.99! Oh, did I mention I got an additional 20% off both items? There's always something good on clearance at Bed Bath & Beyond. And, you'll always find something you can use.

Kobari Beef is a hit
I tried the new Kobari Beef at Panda Express today with the coupon for a free single serving, and it was delicious! I loved the texture, flavor, and slices of beef with some of my favorite vegetables, mushrooms and peppers. The sauce had a nice flavor, too. Great job Panda Express. Keep the delicious dishes coming!

Bed Bath & Beyond has great Clearance!
I was doing some online shopping yesterday but wasn't looking for anything special. I frequently shop at Bed Bath & Beyond in San Jose, so I looked at their site. As I was looking at their clearance items, I came across a Mr. Coffee 4 Cup Coffeemaker (black) for $7.99! What perfect timing! I was considering replacing my old Mr. Coffee Coffeemaker, and at this price, why not? What a sweet deal. Another great product at a low price. Hurry in if you want one, too.

Chicken Casserole
It's quick, delicious, and very inexpensive to make! Chicken casserole is one of my favorite meals. And, it's so simple to prepare. Just cut up a whole chicken, or use individual chicken thighs and/or drumsticks, and season with salt and pepper and a few other seasonings. Then, add a splash of white wine or Dry Sherry and top with vegetables and cream of mushroom soup. Bake for about an hour and serve over white rice. Yum, yum! It's a meal your whole family will love. Stay tuned for more delicious meals.

Festival offers more than wine!
I went to the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival today and had a wonderful time as usual. I wasn't there five minutes before I won something free! My first stop was at the KOFY TV20 booth where I had a chance to win a prize. I was handed three tiny objects to throw and, hopefully, land into a box, small glass, or a tall, plastic cup. I got one out of three in and won a bag of KOFY BLEND coffee beans! Great because I drink coffee every day! Another fun booth was Safeway who gave away free samples of their new Refreshe drink. And, it was refreshing, too, considering it was over 85 degrees in the afternoon in Mountain View, CA - perfect festival weather. Wine and beer were plentiful, and there was a large variety of food, too. The festival will be open tomorrow as well if you want to attend. Have a good time! I always do.

Silk Pure Almond, Great tasting and good for you, too!
Looking for a great-tasting milk that's low in calories your whole family will love? Then, consider buying Silk Pure Almond all natural almond milk! Not only does it tastes good, it only has 60 calories per serving. The vanilla has just 90. The prices vary at various grocery stores, but I recently saw the Original Silk Pure Almond at Costco for $4.99 for two half gallons. What a deal! If you prefer to buy one half gallon at a time (like I usually do), then I suggest going to Target where they carry a variety of flavors for $2.99. The Vanilla Silk Pure Almond is my favorite! Try it; I'll guarantee, you'll like it!

Cantaloupes $0.67 cents Each at Luckys
I love fresh fruit and crave it when the weather's warm. I bought a cantaloupe at Luckys last week and let it sit out a few days before I cut it. It was sweet, juicy, and delicious, the way I like cantaloupes. And at $0.67 cents each, you can't beat the price! I went back today to get one more. When my favorite fruits are on sale, I stock up for the week and enjoy every bite. The sale ends tomorrow, so get some while you can!

Fresh Nectarines $0.77 cents/pound at Safeway!
There's nothing like a piece of fresh, sweet fruit between meals to curb your appetite. I like many fruits, and this week, one of my favorite's is on sale - nectarines! Safeway has fresh, sweet, delicious nectarines on sale for $0.77 cents a pound until Wednesday. I've been waiting for a good price for nectarines for months, and finally, it's here! By a "good price" I mean $0.79 cents a pound, or less. And I love my nectarines right out of the refrigerator, or room temperature if I can't wait to eat one. I'll be back for more before the sale ends. Thank you, Safeway, for sweet, juicy nectarines.

Homemade Apple Pie
I love baking, especially when it's cold outside and I have plenty of time to do it. But today at about 7:30pm when the temperature outside was in the late 70's and early 80's, I baked a homemade apple pie for a family function this Saturday. I believe in the saying "'Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today.'" So, since I was feeling energetic after a long day of work, I got in the kitchen and made the pie. It turned out beautifully, and I took pictures of the pie with my new digital camera, too! Family, I think you're in for a real treat!
Summer Drinks - Limeade Sparklers
After a long day of work, I quickly went through my mail, put some recyclables outside in the bin, and enjoyed a homemade chicken enchilada my neighbor gave me. This went perfect with the $0.99 cent Beefy 5-layer Burrito I bought at Taco Bell on the way home. I enjoyed this meal with a tasty, refreshing Limeade Sparkler I got free with my purchase. If you haven't tried a Limeade Sparkler, get one! They're delicious and flavorful. I like the Classic Limeade and the Cherry Limeade equally the same, but I have to say, the Cherry has more "kick" to it. What a great item at Taco Bell. It's a nice alternative to regular soft drinks.

Need More Fiber?
I don't know about you, but I could use some more fiber - Fiber One bars to be exact. And wouldn't you know it, I found the flavor I've been wanting to try, Oats & Caramel, at Grocery Outlet for only $0.99 cent a box! They're chewy, delicious, and low-calorie, perfect for an afternoon, or evening snack. But, they're great with a cup of coffee in the morning, too. Don't get me wrong, the Oats & Chocolate are delicious, too, but the Oats & Caramel blows me away. I knew I should have bought at least five boxes, instead of three when I purchased them. Sure enough, when I went back last Friday to get more, they were gone! If you're familiar with how Grocery Outlet works, you have to stock up on items you like while they're in stock because they may not appear again for a while. I guess I'm not the only one who loves fiber in their diet.

Great buy for Panasonic Lumix at Best Buy On-line
After weeks of reading reviews, shopping for, and testing digital cameras, I finally chose one. I purchased a Panasonic Lumix 14.1-Megapixel digital camera at Best Buy On-line. I tested the camera at the Best Buy store in Vallejo where I was visiting family members. It scored well as one of the recommended "point and shoot" cameras on the Consumer Reports website. I like the color (silver), too, and can't wait to use it. It was listed for $159.99, and I got it for $135.99, a savings of $24.00 (15% off). The camera came with accessories, too. This was a Sunday-Monday sale I happen to catch when I was researching digital cameras on line late Sunday evening. It was worth the wait because I got a good camera at a great price!
The best green grapes in town!
It's been a while since I've had some good grapes. By good, I mean firm, sweet, and delicious! Well, today I found some at my neighborhood Luckys in San Jose. I purchased nearly four pounds of green grapes for $2.90! They're on sale this week for $0.77 cent a pound until August 10th. At that price, I'll definitely be back for more and others may, too. Thank you, Luckys, for green grapes that tastes the way you advertised them - "sweet," and "juicy."

49ers Training Camp
I didn't do any cooking, shopping, or buying today, but I did enjoy watching the San Francisco 49ers practice at their training camp in Santa Clara, CA. The weather was perfect, beautiful and sunny, with a slight breeze. I smiled as I watched players on my favorite professional football team perform their drills. There were cheers, ooh's and ah's as passes were thrown and caught by the players. I got two free tickets, too, for a 49ers game this month! My 4-year-old nephew had a ball playing football with some boys his age and jumping in the Jumper. If you're interested, there's more 49er practices free to the public. Check the 49ers web site at 49ers.com. Parking is free, too. Enjoy! I sure did.

Caribou Coffee
Little things make me happy, especially getting a clothing or food item I like on sale. Last Thursday, while my mother, sister and I were shopping at Luckys in Vallejo, my sister alerted me that Caribou Coffee was $5.97 (a close out price from $6.97)! I never go anywhere without my coupons and had a $1.00 off coupon for a 12 ounce bag of Caribou Coffee. So, I got it for $4.97! When I got back to San Jose, I printed another $1.00 off coupon from coupons.com, one of my favorite online coupon sites. I purchased another bag of Caribou Coffee from my neighborhood Luckys this morning. I suggest you get over to Luckys and do the same! It's great-tasting coffee, and at this price, it'll go fast.

Fresh Collards from the Garden!
I love collard greens. I've cooked them several times but have always used the packaged greens that are already chopped and cleaned. But this morning, I cleaned and cooked my first batch of fresh collard greens. My cousin in Sacramento, CA brought several bags of collard greens and tomatoes from her garden to a recent family gathering in Vallejo. I smiled when I was asked if I wanted some because I knew they were collards, and the answer was "yes." Someone suggested washing them with baking soda and salt, while another person said "I use dish soap." I had all three items, but decided to use dish soap. I washed and rinsed the greens thoroughly three times, thinking about my mother who I watched clean greens on many occasions. I boiled a ham hock for a little over an hour, then added some seasonings: salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic, and onions. Then, I added the greens and let them simmer for about an hour. They were delicious! I enjoyed the collard greens with some homemade macaroni & cheese and leftover meat loaf from a pot luck. This dish called for a glass of wine, so I poured a glass of Wild Vines Blackberry Merlot. It's sweet and flavorful and a nice alternative to Merlot, Shiraz, or Cabernet Sauvignon. What a great meal!

Larry's Produce
After hearing so many good things about Larry's Produce, I finally got to see what all the fuss was about. I went last Wednesday afternoon with my sister to purchase some fruit, vegetables, and any other items that were a good buy. It's easy to get to, about one mile north of Solano Community College on Suisun Valley Road in Suisun. I can see why several people stocked up on their favorite fruits and vegetables. There were several items to chose from and most were priced lower than grocery stores. I purchased fresh okra and white nectarines for $.99 cent a pound, and a canteloupe and honeydew melon for $1.00 each! The nectarines were firm and sweet the way I like them, and the melons were the sweetest I've ever tasted. Thank you, Larry! Keep the fresh produce coming.

Discounts Galore at Grocery Outlet!
Looking for groceries for less? Food Maxx is known for low prices, but there's another store that offers discounts, too, Grocery Outlet! You may not find everything you're looking for at Grocery Outlet, but several items you do find will be at discount prices. The brands and items vary, so when you find something you like - stock up! You may not see it again for a while. On my last visit to Grocery Outlet, I purchased a gallon of Lady Lee low fat milk for $2.59, a 12 ounce package of ButterBall Turkey Bacon for $2.29, and two 10 ounce packages of Oscar Mayer chicken breast at $1.79 each. There were several more items at great prices, but this was all I purchased on this trip. I'll be back soon for sure!

Low Price for Pineapples!
Fresh pineapples are only $1.69 each at Luckys until tomorrow. I went to my neighborhood Luckys yesterday to buy one and wasn't surprised when I was told they were "out." An employee said they would have more in today. I hope so. Pineapples are one of my favorite fruits, and at $1.69 each, I'm getting two!

Good buys every day at Trader Joe's!
I went to Trader Joe's today to pick up a few items for my dinner tomorrow. I plan to make lasagna and serve it with a garden salad. I needed some Roma tomatoes (my favorite) and Romaine lettuce. It's nice to know you can get produce, dairy, and other grocery items at a reasonable price at Trader Joe's every day! I paid $1.99 for a package of three Romaine Hearts, and $1.99 for a package of six Roma tomatoes (1 pound, 2 ounces). Wine goes well with lasagna, and a glass of Charles Shaw (Two-buck-chuck) Shiraz, will do just fine. This wine has remained $1.99 a bottle for years. It's one of the best buys around, and delicious, too! With great everyday prices and a variety of inexpensive wines, you can't go wrong with shopping at Trader Joe's!

Too Hot to Cook!
If you're like me, you don't like to cook when it's hot or when you're really hungry. As I left work for the day, I wondered what I would eat for dinner. I decided to go to Jack in the Box and use one of the coupons I received in the mail. I rarely go to fast-food restaurants, but when my leftovers are gone, and I don't plan to cook, it's a great place to go for a quick meal. I used the coupon for "two free tacos with any purchase" and bought a small hamburger from the value menu. No, hamburgers and taco's don't go together, but they did for me that night. Jack in the Box's tacos are delicious, although they're probably not low-calorie. I rarely eat them, so it doesn't matter. I wanted a quick meal, and I got it!

Target for Groceries!
By now, most of you know Target carries a variety of grocery items. Until July 24th, there are some great buys to take advantage of. I found this out when I received the coupon booklet in the mail. I'm sure you'll find many of these items useful in your household. Be sure to use the coupon for a free loaf of bread!

CVS Extra Care Card
By now, most people have heard of the Extra Care Card CVS/pharmacy offers customers for free. Why get one? To save money on sale and non-sale items. At a time when many people are cutting back and trying to save money, it amazes me why some people say "no" when a clerk asks "do you have a CVS card?", and "no" when asked "would you like to sign up for one?" The money you save can really add up. For instance, I visited my local CVS/pharmacy this afternoon to purchase one item that was on sale for $1.99. I had a manufacturer's coupon for $0.50 cent off, plus a $1.00 Extra Care savings coupon I received with my last purchase. I only paid $0.67 cents for my purchase! You need to present your Extra Care Card to receive the sale price for items on sale. And read over your receipts carefully because they may contain savings you can use towards a future purchase. Once, I received a savings for $2.00 towards my next purchase. There are some restrictions that apply. Also, don't forget to scan your Extra Care Card at the machine when you enter the store because you can use these savings immediately! So, sign up for an Extra Care Card today! A little savings goes a long way.

What's Cooking?
It was another beautiful day in San Jose - hot with a slight breeze. But it was a little chilly in the morning, as I took my morning walk around 8:30am. As I returned home, I wondered not what I would have for breakfast but what I would have for dinner. I knew it would get warmer later in the afternoon, and I didn't want to be in the kitchen cooking. When it's hot, I like to have my meals prepared in the morning! I decided to cook spaghetti because it's quick and easy. I browned some ground turkey and added some sliced hot links and turkey sausage, too. And because I had a few jar sauces on hand, I used one and added it to the meat mixture. It was a good choice for dinner, especially since I had a loaf of French bread in the freezer. Instead of a salad, I cooked some sauteed cabbage. Yes, you heard me right! I had sauteed cabbage with spaghetti and French bread. I washed it down with a glass of Diet Dr Pepper. I grew up in a household where we didn't waste food, so I decided to cook the cabbage I had in the refrigerator before it went bad. It was delicious! I tossed it in some bacon fat and added salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, and red pepper flakes. Cabbage is great in stir-fry dishes, too, and added with other vegetables to Top Ramen noodles. I decided to cook the cabbage after I returned home from running errands and did so while listening to my favorite radio station 102.9 KBLX. It's very relaxing and therapeutic to cook while listening to music. I sing-a-long to most of the songs, too. What a great meal and good music to keep me company.
P.S. I usually make my spaghetti sauce from scratch, but I was in a hurry to cook and clean up today.

Summer Festivals!
One of my favorite things about summer, besides enjoying activities outdoors with family and friends, are the festivals that are held near my city. I live in San Jose, CA and look forward to all the festivals throughout the summer. One of my favorite's is the Mountain Art & Wine Festival in Mountain View, CA. I enjoy the Almaden and Sunnyvale Art & Wine Festival as well. Today, I attended the Los Altos Art & Wine Festival in Los Altos, CA. The weather was perfect - hot but not to warm that you couldn't enjoy walking around all the blocks of food booths and various vendors. As always, the Los Altos Fire Department had one of their fire trucks at the main entrance, along with the Los Altos Police Department who had a 1950's-type patrol car on display. I immediately began checking out the vendors to see who was giving away good freebies. I entered a few drawings, got a few lollipops and key chains/bottle openers, and enjoyed listening to the music as I strolled down the aisles. Although the festival's about wine (and beer), a trip to the Los Altos Art & Wine Festival wouldn't be complete for me without having one of the refreshing, colorful fruit smoothies! This is a must if you go, and the kids can have one, too. Five dollars gets you a decent-size smoothie any way you want. There's strawberry, banana, and peach. I usually get all three flavors, but strawberry and peach are my favorite. One person ahead of me had her cup filled with mostly strawberry, with a touch of peach. Parking is free at Los Altos High School where a shuttle takes you to the festival for free about a mile away. Tomorrow's the last day if you still want to attend. Dress comfortably and enjoy.

Makeup for the summer
By now, most people (depending on their economic situation) have their summer wardrobe in tact. For women, we have our sandals, shorts, Capri's, short-sleeve shirts, skirts, and for some, tank tops. But what about makeup? May I suggest Bobbi Brown. She has a variety of cool, soft colors in cream eye shadows, blushes, and my favorite new item - SPF 15 lip shines! I recently purchased a berry SPF 15 lip shine and love everything about it. It makes your lips feel soft, moist and gives them a pretty pop of color. My favorite Bobbi Brown cream eye shadow is Sandy Gold and can be worn everyday. It gives the perfect amount of color for eyes when you want a soft, natural look. As for blush, one of my favorites is Mauve in the mauve palette I purchased a few years ago, but I love Spice, too. With all the warm weather, you'll want to protect your lips with Bobbi's Lip Balms and SPF 15 Lip Shines. They're must-have items for the summer!

Good buys at Bath/Body Works!
If you're a Bath & Body Works fan like me, I hope you've taken advantage of the Yellow Sale. If not, you have three more days to stock up on several items at a discount price! Since the sale began three weeks ago, I've purchased several of my favorite products for 50 and 75 percent off! I love the Aromatherapy collection and couldn't resist getting more of my favorite scent, Warm Milk & Honey. I already have a few bottles of the bubble bath, which I love, and decided to buy a few bottles of the shower/bath gel and body lotions as well. At 75% off, why not? I decided to buy a body mist spray, too, to complete my set. This is a great product a woman of any age will love. The anti-bacterial soaps are still 50% off and a few scents were 75% off. Of course, these went fast. I also purchased a few shower creams and a body butter in another favorite scent of mine, Cucumber Melon, at 75% off, too! If you have gifts to give people in the future, I suggest you go to Bath & Body Works by Monday, July 5th! There's still some good deals left.
